Restoring Lives
Our theme for the year highlights the profound essence of our mission: restoring lives. It serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative journey we’ve embarked on over the past 89 years. We strive to continue igniting passion for philanthropy and leave a lasting impact on those we serve.

From Trauma to Triumph
Emily entered therapy after experiencing years of physical and emotional abuse. She struggled with low self-esteem and a profound sense of helplessness. Through a combination of trauma-focused therapy, cognitive-behavioural techniques, and consistent support, Emily gradually started rebuilding her sense of self-worth.
Over time, she learned to manage her triggers and develop healthier coping mechanisms. With the guidance of the Clinical Team, Emily embarked on a journey of healing that allowed her to regain control over her life. Ultimately, Emily’s transformation inspired her to pursue higher education and later become an advocate for survivors of trauma.
Breaking the Cycle
Ali, a teenage boy with a history of behavioural issues and involvement in criminal activities, was referred to the Clinical Team. Ali had experienced multiple traumatic events in his childhood. The team employed a combination of individual therapy, family therapy, and emotional regulation programmes.
Gradually, Ali’s understanding of the underlying causes of his behaviour deepened, and he learned healthier ways to manage his emotions. With time and unwavering support, he managed to leave behind his criminal activities and focus on his education. Eventually, Ali became a peer mentor, using his experiences to guide other troubled youths away from a similar path.
Empowering Families
A family came seeking help due to escalating conflicts between parents and their adolescent daughter, Maya. Through family therapy sessions, the Clinical Team uncovered unresolved communication issues and misunderstandings within the family. As the family learned healthier ways to express themselves and communicate effectively, they began to mend their relationships.
Maya’s behaviour improved significantly as she felt heard and understood by her parents. This case highlighted how addressing family dynamics can lead to lasting change not just for the individual but for the entire family unit.
From Scepticism to Healing
Joshua, a 14-year-old boy, initially approached therapy with scepticism and resistance. He believed that talking about his problems would not make any difference. Over time, through patient and empathetic listening from the Clinical Team, John began to open up about his past traumas and struggles.
Through their collaborative work, John started noticing small but significant shifts in his outlook and emotional wellbeing. This transformation served as a reminder that the therapeutic process can overcome even the most initial reluctance, underscoring the importance of building trust and rapport.
Professional Growth
A particularly challenging case that the Clinical Team encountered involved a young child, Hisham, with severe behavioural issues. He was extremely resistant to direct therapy work and would throw tantrums each time he was made to see a therapist. The Team was initially unsure how to approach the situation effectively. Through consistent collaboration with Hisham’s social workers and care team, co-operation from his family, and trying various indirect and non-verbal therapeutic techniques (such as sand play and art therapy), progress was gradually achieved.
This experience underscored the importance of humility in acknowledging the Team’s limitations while also demonstrating the power of perseverance and adaptability in the face of complex cases. The lessons learned from this case contributed to the Team’s ongoing professional growth.
Love Beyond Memory
Mike, in his 70s, found himself struggling to live alone. Memories started to slip through his fingers, leaving him lost in a labyrinth of confusion. He often missed his medications and his overall health started deteriorating. Once, his attempt to cook even led to a catastrophic explosion of the microwave. Simple tasks became overwhelming for Mike, and living alone became an insurmountable feat. With his nephew’s help, Mike was placed in The Salvation Army Peacehaven Nursing Home, known for its compassionate staff and specialised dementia care. The caring staff embraced Uncle Mike with open hearts, recognising the unique challenges he faced. They approached him with patience, understanding, and a gentle touch.
Through personalised care plans, they tailored their approach to meet his specific needs, creating an environment where he could still find dignity, purposeful living and a sense of well-being. Through active ageing activities that stem cognitive decline, Mike discovered joy in moments he once thought were lost forever. He found solace in the companionship of his fellow residents and the staff, forging friendships that transcended the barriers of memory loss.
Transformation behind Bars
James, a beneficiary in his 30s, spent the best part of his life in prison and attempted suicide twice – once by hanging and another time by an overdose of pills and alcohol. Since young, he felt rejected by his family and had no father figure to guide him during his impressionable youth. As a result, James grew up on the streets and often got into trouble with the law by being involved in fights and drugs. His release from prison in July 2023 saw him taking up a job as a dishwasher but he couldn’t go home to his family. He was subsequently introduced to The Salvation Army where he received help. He is kept on a path away from recidivism and was assisted in obtaining a job as a technician.
The new opportunity allowed him to confidently support this partner and two young children. Through Salvation Army’s interventions, James’ life has been transformed and he is able to face life’s challenges head on without being haunted by his past. His partner has embraced a renewed person and tied the knot to affirm their commitment to one another, to create a brighter future for them.
Healing through Kinship
During his sentence a year ago, Jonathan’s mother-in-law had instructed her daughter, Julie, to divorce Jonathan whilst he was still undergoing a community based programme by the Drug Rehabilitation Centre. Jonathan was initially seen as selfish, self-centered, and abusive towards his wife Julie and was philandering until he had a transformational encounter whilst under the programme, committing to become a better version of himself. His attendance at the chapel service at The Salvation Army arranged by the Singapore Prison Service provided further guidance, support, and encouragement that propelled him to persevere in making a positive change in his life.
Today, Jonathan has been freed of his shackles of the past and continues on the right path with stable employment in a logistics company. More importantly, his mother-in-law has accepted him as one of her own and both Jonathan and Julie are now happily rebuilding their lives, restoring the lost time they could have had with each other.
